Specification:

Cefotetan (CAS NO.69712-56-7) is a white to pale yellow powder which is very soluble in water. Reconstituted solutions of cefotetan (cefotetan disodium for injection) are intended for intravenous and intramuscular administration. The solution varies from colorless to yellow depending on the concentration. The pH of freshly reconstituted solutions is usually between 4.5 to 6.5.

Cefotetan in the ADD-Vantage Vial† is intended for intravenous use only after dilution with the appropriate volume of ADD-Vantage diluent solution. Cefotetan (CAS NO.69712-56-7) is a parenteral, semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. Reproduction studies in rats and monkeys found no evidence of impaired fertility or fetal harm at doses up to 20 times the human dose. Cephalosporins are usually considered safe to use during pregnancy.

The chemical structure of cefotetan , like that of several other cephalosporins, contains an N-methylthiotetrazole (NMTT or 1-MTT) side chain. As the antibiotic is broken down in the body, it releases free NMTT, which can cause hypoprothrombinemia (likely due to inhibition of the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase) and a reaction with ethanol similar to that produced by disulfiram (Antabuse), due to inhibition of aldehyde dehydrogenase. Cefotetan disodium is a semisynthetic, beta-lactamase resistant, cephalosporin (cephamycin) antibiotic.
